neither heeding
nor knowing
the wishes
of the minds
that flicker
for a second now
and then in the darkness

disturbing men
of insane knowledge
and lore
delving into arcana
of consciousness
that few have trod
learning things about the secret pits of life
legend
archaic
antiquity
which disturbed him thereon
once he met a man who was
shunned and feared for
his blasphemous tomes
sharing his studies for seven years
til horror overtook them one night
only one emerged
where two
had entered

amidst this chaos of hollowness and unrest he tried to live as befitted

of men

of dreams he once had
and to make him
homesick
for ethereal lands
gross stupidity
falsehood
muddled thinking
are not dream
form no escape
from life
to a mind
above their level

from the misconception
that life has a meaning apart
from that they dream
they cast off the old lore
with the old beliefs
nor they think those lores
were their sole guides
having lost these
their lives grew
void of interest and
direction
til at length
they strove
to drown
in noise and excitement
